About 30 miles from Greenville,
SC. Table Rock is a Dent Stephen’s favorite for many reasons, not the least of
which is how accessible it is from South Carolina
and Georgia.
It’s remote enough that you’re really camping, but close enough to amenities
and a hospital that you can safely bring children and first time campers. The
view is breathtaking and the admission fees are very low. Enjoy Table Rock with
family, friends, and even pets!
DreherIslandState
Recreation Area:
Just 30 miles from Columbia,
DreherIsland
is in NewberryCounty and a Dent Stephen’s top pick for
its incredible fishing and water recreation. Families are encouraged to rent
lakeside villas, but pets are not welcome in the villa area. To bring pets I
recommend picking an area to set up your tent away from the villas on the other
side of the lake. Gorgeous three islands, nearly 350 acres to enjoy!
MountainBridge Wilderness Area:
Perfect
for bird watching and those who like many trails to hike, this wooded mountain
terrain is a true outdoorsman’s paradise. Adjacent to Caesar’s HeadState
Park, trailside camping is a breeze and offers
picnicking. More than 7400 acres, you won’t run out of exciting new adventures
here! Pets allowed, on leash ONLY. Located in GreenvilleCounty,
just about 15 miles from a hospital, grocer and other amenities. Don’t miss out
on this one during spring!
H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field:
For the equestrian camper, Dent
Stephen recommends H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field. With nearly 25 miles of
horse-friendly trails, H. Cooper is also a great campground for dogs. This
recreation area offers outdoor camping as well as cabins. Sailing and fishing
are also available here, and there’s even a nearby golf course! Stables and
corrals available for horses. Dent Stephen rates this as the best “all around”
site because of its diverse activity offerings and terrain. Only 12 miles to
town for easy access to conveniences.
